TUCSON, AZ – Savannah Guthrie took the day off from co-anchoring TODAY as news about her mom, Nancy Guthrie, going missing from her Tucson home continues to update. Sheinelle Jones and Craig Melvin filled in for their co-worker and addressed the Guthrie family crisis at the top of Monday’s show.
“We want to get right to what is a deeply personal story for us, Nancy Guthrie, Savannah’s beloved mother, has been reported missing in Arizona,” Craig Melvin told viewers. A statement from Savannah Guthrie was released to the public.
“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers, and messages of support,” Guthrie told her TODAY supporters. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom,” the co-anchor said.
“We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900.”
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is treating Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance as a crime. The 84-year-old was last seen on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
“We saw some things at the home that were concerning to us,” Sheriff Chris Nanos said during a press conference on Monday (Feb. 2). “We believe now, after we process that crime scene, that we do in fact have a crime scene, that we do in fact have a crime, and we’re asking for the community’s help.”
In addition to things law enforcement discovered at the home that were questionable, Sheriff Nanos pointed to the overall health of Nancy Guthrie as a sign of potential foul play.
“I think I told you she is very limited in her mobility,” Sheriff Nanos told the press. “We know she didn’t just walk out of there. That we know. There are other things at the site…that indicate …she did not leave on her own. We know that.”
Nancy Guthrie made several appearances on TODAY before her disappearance this past weekend. The most recent appearance on the show was in November 2025, when Savannah Guthrie did a segment about her hometown of Tucson.
“When I was in my 30s, I really wished to be married and to be a mom, and things just did not happen that fast for me,” Guthrie said when reflecting on having children later in life. “And my mom’s confidence that I would be a mom — even as the years ticked by and ticked by and ticked by — meant so much to me,” the TODAY co-anchor continued.

“She said, ‘Of course you’ll be a mom, and you’re going to be a wonderful mom,’” Guthrie said of her mom’s encouragement. “And for her to have that confidence and faith was so meaningful to me. It got me through some really hard times.”
Those with information related to the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie should contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at (520) 351-4900.
