Readers Praise ‘Careless People’ Author Sarah Wynn-Williams For U.S. Senate Testimony

Sarah Wynn-Williams is celebrated among readers and the United States Senate. Flatiron Books took to Instagram on Wednesday (Apr. 9) to shed light on the Careless People author’s bravery in testifying before the Senate about allegations against Meta.

“MacMillan Publishers and Flatiron Books salute Sarah Wynn-Williams, the author of Careless People, for her brave testimony at today’s Senate hearing,” Flatiron Books shared on its social media page. “The investigation by the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism and their confirmation that they have reviewed records corroborating claims made in the book are incredibly validating.”

Meta attempted to stop further production of Sarah Wynn-Williams’ Careless People days after its release. The tech giant sued the author for reportedly violating a non-disparagement clause in her severance agreement and also attempted to publicly discredit her account of events as told in her book.

Sarah Wynn-Williams joined Facebook in 2011 and worked as an executive until 2017 when she was reportedly fired from Meta for “poor performance.” Her memoir delves into the highs and lows of the business while shedding a bright light on the amount of power and national influence Mark Zuckerberg and other executives held during critical pivots in the country’s social scene.

It is the amount of influence Zuckerberg and other tech giants held over the nation and worldwide that caught the attention of the United States Senate. Sarah Wynn-Williams answered questions related to Zuckerberg’s efforts to break into the Chinese market, which began in 2014, among other things during her hearing.

“The greatest trick Mark Zuckerberg ever pulled was wrapping the American flag around himself and calling himself a patriot and saying he didn’t offer services in China, while he spent the last decade building an $18 billion business there,” Sarah Wynn-Williams told the U.S. Senate.

Senator Josh Hawley demanded Mark Zuckerberg answer for reportedly partnering with China to advance his company’s agenda. “It’s time for Mark Zuckerberg to come to Capitol Hill, take an oath, and answer to America for how he has sold out our country’s security for China profits,” Hawley posted on X.

Meta has denied Sarah Wynn-Williams’ account of Mark Zuckerberg doing business with China. “Sarah Wynn-Williams’ testimony is divorced from reality and riddled with false claims,” Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said in a statement. “While Mark Zuckerberg himself was public about our interest in offering our services in China and details were widely reported beginning over a decade ago, the fact is this: we do not operate our services in China today.”

Readers joined Pan MacMillan Publishers in praising Sarah Wynn-Williams for her bravery in testifying before the Senate despite Meta’s previous lawsuit, which many believe was meant to silence her account of things.

“Very brave of her to write this book, and kudos to all involved in the publishing of it for not backing down,” one social media follower said. Another supporter wrote, “It’s a truly fantastic memoir. Thank you to you, Macmillan Publishers, and Sarah Wynn-Williams for getting this book out in the world.”

Careless People by Sarah Wynn-Williams is available on digital platforms and in bookstores nationwide.
