Verity, the movie, has an official release date. The film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s popular book is set to hit theaters next year.
In the book, Verity is a successful writer who is unable to finish her forthcoming novel due to an accident. Her husband hires a ghostwriter who stumbles upon letters that give insight into the life Verity has led. From the ghostwriter’s perspective, Verity is either a genius or a psychopath. Hoover ultimately leaves the verdict up to the readers to decide.
Anne Hathaway was cast as Verity in the forthcoming film last November, which caused some fans to protest. Many who loved seeing Hathaway in The Princess Diaries found the role to be an insult to her talent.
“Anne, look at me, you are better than this,” one critic said on X. Another Anne Hathaway supporter said, “Anne, you are so much better than these faux feminist and fanfiction cash grabs. Please drop this and get to work on Princess Diaries 3.”
Colleen Hoover is certainly no stranger to scrutiny. Her book It Ends With Us has been all the rave and hate on TikTok for years. Some love the story’s plot, which centers around a woman who falls in love with a neurosurgeon only to find him to be an abusive partner. Others deem Lily and Ryle’s story as one that glorifies domestic violence.
Verity is different from It Ends With Us as it is more of a thriller novel. Colleen Hoover expressed her desire to dig more into the genre during a recent interview.
“I plan to write more thriller novels for sure,” the author said. “I’m just waiting for a good enough idea.”
Verity – starring Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, Josh Hartnett, Ismael Cruz Cordóva, and Brady Wagner – comes to theaters on May 15, 2026.
