Not all heroes wear capes, and not all superheroes have the golden touch. Some superstars have to work to attain greatness, and they do so with a lot of heart. Such is the story of Hughes in Stephen Curry’s I Have A Superpower.
Summary
Hughes is a kid who has big dreams of playing for the NBA. He isn’t tall like others, though, and his natural skills aren’t the greatest. Hughes, however, is passionate about being the best basketball player he can be. His superpower is that he has heart.
Not Another Celebrity Picture Book
It’s no secret that celebrities expand their brands by getting into industries that are not their fields of expertise. It is, therefore, not a complete surprise to see Steph Curry delve into the publishing world. I Have A Superpower, however, is different.
This book does not necessarily speak of Curry’s journey to the NBA, though some readers may create a connection between Hughes and Curry. The intention of this book is not to reflect on Curry’s accomplishments in sports but rather to tell a story that encourages kids to dream big and never lose heart.
I Have A Superpower is not another celebrity picture book written for the central purpose of expanding the author’s portfolio. This is a book kids can read and ultimately learn how to become better humans.
Curry Appears
There are a few elements of I Have A Superpower that can throw a curveball at the reader. One, in particular, is the appearance of Stephen Curry at the end. We are aware of his role as the author of the book. Stephen, however, also serves as a character in the story, which presents an interesting turn of events.
In all frankness, I could have done without Curry greeting kids on the basketball court at the book’s end. I don’t think this part of the story added anything of substance to the narrative. Curry does, at least, introduce a list of objects hidden throughout the story that he invites kids to go back and find. This is the saving grace of this section of the book.
Great Story Overall
There are a few awkward moments in I Have A Superpower but, overall, this is a great book with an excellent storyline. This is a good choice for small children who know how to read.
