STEYNING, WEST SUSSEX, U.K. – Robert Guanco, 41, is the man identified as the individual fatally struck by a sign at the Big Church Festival on Friday (Aug. 28). The pastor of Jesus Living Water Church in Eastbourne was reportedly protecting his daughter when he was fatally struck by the large object.
Winds reached significant speeds during the Big Church Festival, which was held at the Winston Estate this past Friday. Some have speculated weather conditions as the main culprit in the incident in which a large overhead sign fell on seven festival attendees, though the tragedy is still under investigation.
Four individuals were taken to the hospital with injuries sustained from the sign falling over. Pastor Robert Guanco reportedly died at the scene.
Big Church Festival organizers released an updated statement regarding the incident on Sunday (Aug. 30). “We are devastated by the serious incident that took place at Big Church Festival 2026, in which Pastor Robert Guanco tragically lost his life and others were injured,” the event’s organizers shared.
“Following the incident, we made the decision to bring Big Church 2026 to a close for the safety and wellbeing of everyone involved,” the public statement read. “We are working with the police, the Health and Safety Executive and others as they establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.”
Congregants at Jesus Living Water Church in Eastbourne described Pastor Robert Guanco as a caring individual. The church created a GoFundMe page to help the late clergyman’s family financially after his untimely passing.
“Pastor Robert was a faithful servant of God, a loving husband to Isay, a devoted and caring father to Ellie, and a blessing to so many people whose lives he touched,” the GoFundMe page read. “His life, his faith, his love and his service to God will never be forgotten,” the message continued.
“He was also a good friend, mentor and a blessing to so many people whose lives he touched. His life reflected humility, faith, love, compassion and service. Through his ministry, kindness, prayers and encouragement, he touched many lives. His passing is deeply felt by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.”
The Big Church Festival is the United Kingdom’s largest annual Christian music celebration. The event is usually held over the span of several days and includes some of Christian music’s notable artists.
