“The Snow Lords have struck again,” Murray exclaimed in her announcement. “Winston-Salem! 15 inches tomorrow? Really? I thought y’all were ‘Down South,’” the author wrote. “Anyway, stay home tomorrow.”

Half of the United States has experienced record snowfall in what some are recognizing as historic snowstorms. A winter snowstorm came to North Texas last month, which caused many schools and places of worship to close out of caution.

Those living in South Carolina and North Carolina were warned about the snowstorm coming their way but did not believe it would drastically interfere with daily operations since the states have not experienced record snowfall since the twentieth century.

Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines and City Manager Pat Pate addressed the region’s conditions in an update, published on the city’s website, last Friday (Jan. 30).

“During this past weekend’s winter event, the City received an unexpected amount of sleet with extremely cold conditions for our area which made this a very different situation from a typical snow event,” the mayor and city manager said. “Each afternoon and evening, thawed ice on the roadways refroze, creating additional challenges.”

“These conditions were further complicated by sustained, extremely low temperatures from 10 degrees to 20 degrees Fahrenheit. When temperatures fall below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, road salt becomes much less effective, limiting our ability to treat roads successfully.”

City officials urged residents to proceed with caution when traveling and, if possible, stay indoors until conditions improved. News of a second snowstorm began to spread on Tuesday (Feb. 3). Such is why Victoria Christopher Murray moved her Harlem Rhapsody book tour date, originally scheduled for Wednesday (Feb. 4), to Monday, February 23, 2026, at 6:30 p.m.

“Until then … BE SAFE,” the author told her supporters.
